Planning your GAW event

We are excited that you are thinking about planning an event for Gifted Awareness Week Australia! Having a range of local, state and national events during Gifted Awareness Week is our most important strategy to raise awareness, and we rely on individuals, organisations, associations, business and schools like you to organise an event in your local community.

Your event can be small, big, in-person or online, fun or serious, for children or adults, just for your school community or open to anyone. The limit to ideas is only your imagination! To give you some ideas, previous GAW events have included:

  • Coffee or catch-ups (at a local café, playground, park etc)
  • Picnic in the park
  • Student competitions (art, poetry, posters, thinking activities etc)
  • Formal or academic presentations by an expert, researcher or member of your community
  • Expo or display (of student work, info for teachers, facts about gifted etc)
  • Other...the only limit is your creativity!

Here are some guidelines to help you plan your event

Registering your event

It is important to register your event (even if it is private) so we can present a united front across Australia to better raise awareness. Events can be registered from March 1st each year until 5 days before the start of GAW. All registered events will be published on the GAW website, and may be mentioned on social media. (NB. Contact details for events registered as ‘private’ will not be shared publicly. Only the event title and organising school, business or organisation name will be made public). After you have registered your event, you can still change or add details before it is included on the GAW website. Event organisers will receive a link to additional resources to help plan and promote your event.

Safety

As the organiser, you are responsible for considering and planning for the safety of children and adults attending your event, and for any insurance needed at the venue.

Dates

Events must be held during the dates of Gifted Awareness Week Australia (event registrations outside these dates cannot be accepted).

Private events

Events labelled as ‘private’ (eg. just for the teachers, parents or students at your school) will not have any contact details published on the GAW website. Only the event title and organising school, business or organisation name will be made public. Please still register your event so we can publicise the number of events happening around Australia! This helps us to raise awareness at a national level and gives others ideas for their event.

Promoting your event

Please acknowledge that this is an AAEGT event in any advertising. Having a united front across Australia means we can better advocate for the needs of gifted children. The GAW Logo and flyer templates will be made available to event organisers after your have registered your event.

Social media

Consider sharing your event on social media either during or after and tag @GiftedAwarenessWeekAustralia so we can celebrate all the events happening around Australia. Please ensure you have permission before sharing photos of faces. If you are unsure, you can share photos of backs of heads, signs, student work or other aspects of your event.

Once you have registered your event, you will receive additional resources to help you plan, including the GAW Logo, PowerPoint and flyer templates and more.
